An introduction of Kunitachi College of Music
April 1926 | Formally known as Tokyo Koto Ongaku Gakuin (Tokyo Conservatory of Music) with its temporary building located at Tokyo City. Prof. Isamu Watanabe was appointed as the first president. |

December 1928 | Joint choral performance of Beethoven’s "Symphony No. 9" with The New Symphony Orchestra (presently known as NHK Symphony Orchestra). |
September 1930 | Prof. Yukimitsu Mimurodo was appointed as the president. |
August 1940 | Tokyo Koto Ongaku Gakuin was authorized by the ministry of education as the first private college to offer training to elementary school teachers as music teaching diploma course. |
December 1941 | Tokyo Koto Ongaku Gakuin was authorized by the ministry of education as the first private college to offer training to junior high school teachers as music teaching diploma course. |
June 1946 | Prof. Masahiro Tsuchikawa was appointed as the president. |
July 1947 | Renamed Kunitachi College of Music (Kunitachi Music School). |
April 1949 | Kunitachi Junior High School, and Kunitachi Senior High School were established. (The present Kunitachi College of Music Junior & Senior High School) |
February 1950 | Kunitachi College of Music obtained authorization. Prof. Daigoro Arima was appointed as the president. Musicology Faculty, Music Education Faculty was established (Music Education was first introduced and established in Japan at Kunitachi) in addition to the Vocal, Instrumental, Composing Studies. |
July 1950 | Kunitachi College of Music attached Kindergarten was established. |
February 1951 | Change of entity. Legally authorized as an incorporated educational institution. |
April 1953 | Kunitachi College of Music attached Elementary School was established. |
April 1963 | Early Childhood Music Education Faculty was established. |
April 1966 | Lessons commenced at Jyosuidai, Tachikawa City. |
April 1968 | Graduate School of Music Studies (Master Program) was established. |
April 1978 | Relocation of the college at Tachikawa City. |
April 1979 | Prof. Bin Ebisawa was appointed as the president. Kunitachi College of Music Research Institute – Collection for Organology was opened. |
November 1982 | Completion of the Concert Hall (Main Hall and Recital Hall). |
April 1988 | Collection for Organology was established (a spin-off from Kunitachi College of Music Research Institute). |
April 1990 | Major in Piano Education was incorporated into the Music Education department. |
April 1991 | Prof. Taisuke Yoshida was appointed as the president. Electronic Keyboard Instruments Faculty, Technology and Aesthetics of Sound Faculty were established. |
April 1991 | Completion of the Building 6. |
April 1995 | Tama Academic Consortium was established. |
April 1999 | Prof. Azuma Uematsu was appointed as the president. |
April 2000 | School Education Major was incorporated into the Music Education Faculty. Newly established Music Therapy Course into Music Education Studies (Faculty). |
April 2003 | Prof. Noriko Takano was appointed as the president. |
April 2004 | Restructuring of Faculties (Consolidated 7 departments into 3 Faculties: Performing, Music Cultural Design, and Music Education) with reorganized curriculum. |
April 2006 | 80th Anniversary (A 3 years special program was developed to commemorate the 80th Anniversary). |
February 2007 | Cooperation Agreement with the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna. |
April 2007 | Prof. Susumu Shono was appointed as the president. Doctoral School (PhD) was established. |
March 2008 | Cooperation Agreement with Tachikawa City. |
December 2009 | Cooperation Agreement with the National Taiwan Normal University. |
April 2011 | Jazz Major was incorporated into the Department of Music Performance. |
May 2011 | Completion of the New Building 1. |
July 2012 | Cooperation Agreement with the University of Music Karlsruhe. |
April 2013 | Cooperation Agreement with the Paris-Sorbonne University and the Basel Academy of Music. |
July 2013 | Cooperation Agreement with the College of Music, Mahidol University. |
October 2013 | Cooperation Agreement with the Geneva University of Music. |
November 2013 | Cooperation Agreement with the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory of Music. |
January 2014 | Cooperation Agreement with the California Institute of the Arts. |
